I’ve been pottering away at my crochet squares in between naps, using Stylecraft Special DK as before. I haven’t knitted a stitch for ages, it’s all about the crochet at the moment! I’m so delighted to have grasped it (finally!) that I can’t put it down. Then again, it could be what my mother calls “another one of your fads”.

These squares are crocheted in ‘Candy Floss’, ‘Fondant’ and Meadow’ with white edging.

These squares are crocheted in ‘Cloud Blue’, ‘Candy Floss’ and ‘Fondant’, again with white edging.

One thing the blanket project has taught me is that I am scared of colour. Sure, I’ve knitted scarves with brightly coloured yarns, but I knew I’d be wearing them against a background of grey, navy or black. It’s not even as if I’ve chosen very strong colours for the blanket, but it seems like a riot of colour to me and it’s pushing me way out of my comfort zone!

I’ve been asked how to crochet the squares I’m making, so I’ll post with instructions shortly.

It’s WIP Friday (as I’m a bit late for WIP Wednesday)! I’ve been pondering what to knit alongside the dreaded baby jacket. I thought of doing a smaller project, but in the end I thought, “if in doubt, try Kim Hargreaves”. In my experience, her designs are easy to make and invariably end up with a well fitting and classic garment.

I looked through my Kim Hargreaves’ books and I decided on ‘Wisdom’ from Cherished, which is a round necked cardigan in alternate bands of stocking and double moss stitch using Rowan Felted Tweed DK.

The temptation was to make it in grey (to add to my grey cardigan collection), but I decided to use some Rowan Felted Tweed in ‘Watery’ from my stash, which is a bluey-green. This is a radical departure for me, cardigan-wise, but I have some skirts with flecks of a similar colour in their prints.

So far, I have knitted the back almost up to the top of the armholes. It’s nice, easy knitting and the yarn feels lovely – all squishy and plumptious. I got a bit carried away with knitting this last night, which made my hands and wrists hurt, so it’s nice to have the card making as an alternative.
