I was asked if I’d share the instructions for the crochet squares I’ve been making. I must stress that I’m not claiming to have invented this square pattern; there are many other tutorials available online. I’m just sharing what I’ve been doing. I’m a beginner at crochet and tutorials so if you spot any mistakes or if anything isn’t clear, please let me know. I use UK crochet terms throughout (UK treble = US double crochet). OK, let’s get started!
- ch = chain
- sl st = slip stitch
- tr = treble
Make a slip knot on the hook. Ch 4. Join with sl st into the first chain to form a ring. Ch 3.
Round 1: 1 tr into the middle of the ring, ch1.
Repeat (1tr into the middle of the ring, 1ch) until you have a wheel with 12 ‘spokes’. Join to 3rd chain of ch3 at the beginning of the round. Cut yarn and fasten off.
Round 2: attach new colour yarn. Ch3, 1tr into a space between two ‘spokes’ from round 1. Ch1. I weave in the yarn ends as I go, following attic24′s instructions.
(2tr into next space, ch1) x 11. Join to 3rd chain of ch3 at the beginning of the round. Cut yarn and fasten off.
Round 3: attach new colour yarn. You are going to make the circle into a square in this round by making 4 corners and 4 sides. Ch3, 1tr, ch2, 2tr into the same space to make the first corner. Ch1.
(2tr into the next space, ch1) x 2 to make a side of the square.
Repeat the corner and the side 3 times more. Join to 3rd chain of ch3 at the beginning of the round. Cut yarn and fasten off.
Round 4: attach new colour yarn. Ch3, 2tr, 2 ch, 3 tr into the same space to make the first corner. Ch1.
(3tr into the next space, ch1) x 3 to make a side of the square.
Repeat the corner and the side 3 times more. Join to 3rd chain of ch3 at the beginning of the round. Cut yarn and fasten off.
Admire your finished square!
