I have two main knitting times…

The first is lunchtimes at work. I work in a publicly accessible office and I don’t get a proper lunchbreak if I stay at my desk. Someone will want to speak to me, even if they can see I’ve got half a sandwich crammed in my mouth. So, for the sake of my sanity, I seek an hour’s quiet time elsewhere.

I sit in my car (oh the glamour!), eat my lunch and then I have about 40 minutes knitting time. I tend to listen to a podcast (Electric Sheep) or music on my iPod whilst I’m knitting. In fact, I’ve been listening to the same album for the past two weeks – Mumford & Sons’ “Sigh No More” – which I’m absolutely loving still.

I was knitting in my car one lunchtime, when two people got out of a posh car parked next to me. I’ve never seen anyone goggle before, but they were the very personification of goggling when they saw me knitting. Both of them stood open mouthed and stared at me for a full five minutes. If I’d been casually strangling a small fluffy creature in the car, they couldn’t have looked more horrified. One of the advantages of getting older is that I’m less bothered about other peoples’ opinions, so I thought “jog on” and carried on knitting happily.

My other knitting time is evenings at home. I snuggle up on the sofa with my blanky, hot water bottle (if it’s cold enough) and plenty of cushions. I listen to music or (more usually) watch TV. I don’t tend to eat and knit, but I do like a nice cup of tea. I enjoy watching crime dramas – I find ‘Miss Marple’ is perfect for a spot of knitting.

However, recently I’ve learned to balance my laptop on my outstretched legs, so I can watch ‘The Killing’ on catch-up. I find it tricky to read subtitles and knit at the same time (‘The Killing’ is Danish), so I do a simple project (like the Lightweight Pullover) which I don’t need to monitor too closely.

I’ll admit the above photo was staged for this blog post, but I did dive under the blanky, knit and watch a ‘Miss Marple’ after I’d taken it. I am so rock n’ roll.

POSTSCRIPT: It’s the last day of Knitting and Crochet Blog Week. Huge thanks to Eskimimi for all her hard work. If you visited my blog, thank you. If you left a comment, I’ve tried visit yours and leave a comment for you. If I missed anyone, I’m sorry. I’ve been poorly again this week, so it’s been a struggle to keep up. I’ve enjoyed reading different approaches to the same subject from bloggers I follow already and, happily, I’ve found some new blogs to read. Yay, new friends!
