Last December I knitted a pair of Toast wristwarmers. I’d intended to make some fingerless mitts, but I couldn’t do thumbs. I wore them over the Christmas holidays, but I found them awkward. If I had them pulled over my hands and wrists, I couldn’t use my thumbs. If I pulled them down, I got cold hands.

As the weather has turned colder this year, I got out my wristwarmers and pondered their fate. I love the yarn – it’s Bluefaced Leicester Aran in ‘Midnight Blue’. I’m very fond of navy and this is a lovely, semi-solid shade which gave the wristwarmers subtle stripes. I could have worked an EZ afterthought thumb, but I decided to frog them and start again.

I gave the yarn a bath to smooth out the kinks and then rewound it into balls. I cast on for Toasty using 4.5mm dpns and followed the pattern with no mods. I worked the thumbs as directed, and this time it was easier. There were some holes at the base of the thumbs, but I left a length of yarn before picking up stitches and working the thumbs, so I could sew up the gaps.

Thanks to OH for taking this photo. I have my fingers curled over because my nails are awful! I’m very happy with my reworked Toasty mitts. They are soft and cosy, but best of all, they’re useful.
