I knitted Multnomah, my second shawl for the 10 shawls for 2010, during February. I used just under 1 skein of Malabrigo Sock in ‘Indiecita’ from my stash, which makes this one of the smaller shawls for the challenge (I used approx 430 yards).
I love Malabrigo Sock. The yarn has a luxuriously silky texture and finished items have a lovely drape. The colours of ‘Indiecita’ are subtle – greens, blues and violets – which remind me of Monet’s waterlilies paintings (not to be pretentious or anything…).

Multnomah
‘Multnomah’ was an unchallenging knit, which was perfect for my state of mind at the time. You begin with a garter stitch section with kfb increases over a two row repeat to create the triangular shape and the central ‘spine’. The pattern specifies 35 repeats of the two rows. However, I needed only 34 repeats to get the right stitch count for the edging.
The next section is feather and fan, one of my favourite stitch patterns. The pattern suggests 10 repeats of the 4 row f&f sequence. I managed to get 13 repeats from my 440 yard skein; as 13 is my lucky number I was happy about this!
Finally, I used Jeny’s surprisingly stretchy bind off. I wanted the edge to be elastic enough to stretch into points when blocking. The finished shawl measures 50″ x 18″.
My ‘Multnomah’ will be nice for spring – it’s light but warm – and the colours cheer up all the grey and black in my wardrobe.

That is an amazing colourway. I don’t think I’ve ever seen it before. It makes a beautiful shawl!
