Thank you for the comments on my last post about Mara. I have decided to persevere, so I’m knitting on with the ribbed section and I’ll see how it looks when it’s blocked. The rows are getting awfully long…
I’ve been thinking about joining the ’10 shawls in 2010 challenge’ on Ravelry. The rules are you have to complete 10 shawls between January 1 and December 31 2010 (no WIPS count!). 8 of the shawls must use at least 250 metres of yarn, 2 of the shawls must use at least 500 metres of yarn. There are no upper meterage limits. The shawls can be any shape and you can design your own if you wish.
I went to one of the I Knit Weekender days last year and I was inspired by the lovely handknitted scarves and shawls other people were wearing; they can look so stylish and make an outfit a little more special.
I thought it would it be good to set myself a knitting goal and Mara would count as one of the 500 metres + shawls.
The final part of the challenge I’m setting myself is that I must use stash yarn (where possible) as part of my stashdown. I’m not ruling out one or two little pay day treats though…
Let me know if you’ve got any great shawl patterns to suggest!

Shawls are something I never really “got” until I knitted my first one. I’m now on my third and I have more patterns queuing. I am currently working on multnomah and I have just bought the patterns for Wendy Johnson’s Argus Shawlette. She makes lovely shawls.
I am working my way up to using the laceweight yarn I bought at the Ravelry Day last year and then I will make Laminaria and my dream shawl the Aeolian Shawl. It might take another year or so of shawl knitting, but I will get there in the end.
You are a brave woman to consider trying 10 in 2010, I’ll be lucky to manage 3!

I fancied Multnomah too – look forward to seeing yours when it’s done. I know! It’s no big deal if I don’t finish 10 but I thought it would do me good to have a goal…

I joined the 10 in 2010 group. There are a couple of other things I wanted to share with you…
Did you know there is a TwitKAL(twitter KAL) starting this Weds to make the Traveling Woman shawl?
Do you know about the Craft or Bust group? It is a great incentive to work through those wips.
There is more info on my blog with links to both projects if you are interested.

Glad to hear you’re sticking with Mara. I saw your last post on my iTouch so I couldn’t comment but I thought it looked lovely.
I’ve just sworn off knitting any more shawls this year as I’ve done loads in the last few month but I can heartily recommend:
Ishbel, Daybreak, Colonnade, Little Colonnade, Stripy kerchief, Citron and Levels – I enjoyed knitting all of them!

Thanks everyone, some great suggestions. I’ll be adding those to my Rav Queue if they aren’t lurking there already.
No I didn’t know about the TwitKAL or the Craft or Bust group, thanks will take a look.

I joined the group as a way to get more shawls done. I really wanted to increase my knowledge and skill set of lace/shawl work and after completing Citron in Dec 09 was really hooked.
I have not officially cast on my first shawl yet as I am stuck in which yarn which shawl patter mode! Good Luck !

Ooh, the group sounds great – I could never keep up but I’ll look forward to seeing how you get on if you do decide to join! I really like Clothilde and the Woodland shawl at the moment! Plus there are some beautiful if a bit difficult-looking patterns in Nancy Bush’s Estonian lace book.

I did not think I was a shawl person, but was hooked after making 3 last year (Shetland Triangle, Ulmus and Milkweed). Like others here I have just finished Multnomah, and am working on my second. Easy, lovely pattern.
I am not sure I will make it, but have joined 10 shawls in 2010 too. I plan to knit all of them from my stash. Both goals might be optimistic, time will show…
I have queued the shawls I would like to knit here (from number 5 and down). Mara is one of them. I have picked out several small shawls, because I have limited knitting time:

Your Mara looked lovely by the way. Good luck, I look forward to seeing your shawls!

Thanks for the link to your Rav list. I hadn’t seen the Theory Shawlette before but that’s now been added to my queue!
I look forward to seeing how everyone’s shawls turn out
